1.Trincomalee City ...
Trincomalee City is one of the most magical cities in Sri Lanka. Also, it is a city with a long history. Trincomalee is located on Sri Lanka's northeastern coast. Stretching on either side of a narrow peninsular, it is flanked by some of the most idyllic white-sand beaches in Sri Lanka. Trincomalee is a two-hour drive from Anuradhapura, in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, and 265 kilometers from Colombo.
Trincomalee was also known as Gokannathitha in ancient times and Trincomalee Bay located on the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka is one of the best natural harbors in the world.
Trincomalee was a major settlement of Indo-Aryan migrants in early times. The Thousand-Pillar Temple (also known as the Koneswaram Temple), at the tip of the peninsula, came into use as a Hindu temple in the 7th century or earlier. The first Europeans to occupy the city were the Portuguese in the 17th century; They destroyed the temple and built a fortress out of its stones. The port's ownership changed repeatedly between the Dutch, the French, and the British until the British took it over permanently in 1795. After the Japanese expelled the British from Singapore during World War II, Trincomalee's importance as a major British base increased. In 1942, the Japanese bombed the city. The British continued to hold the port after Sri Lanka's independence but relinquished it in 1957.
The port of Trincomalee is no longer commercially important due to congestion and labor problems in Colombo, Sri Lanka's commercial capital and main port in the 1960s. But tourism has become an important part of the local economy. Also, there are good road connections with the rest of Sri Lanka. In December 2004, a large tsunami triggered by an undersea earthquake near Indonesia killed hundreds of people and caused widespread devastation in Trincomalee.
2. Thirukoneshwaram Kovil......
Thirukoneswaram Temple is a classical medieval Hindu temple complex in Trincomalee, the eastern capital of Sri Lanka, which is directly related to Sri Lanka's Ramayana. It is also known as Thirukonamalai Konesar Vihara, Thousand Pillars, and Daskina Vihara, Kailasam Vihara. This is an important Hindu religious pilgrimage center in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, the location of the famous Ramayana Path. Thirukoneswaram Hindu Temple is an important Pancha Ishvara Hindu temple in Sri Lanka located in Trincomalee. Other Ishwara temples are Jaffna Naguleswaram Temple, Matara Thondeswaram Temple (Thenavaram), Halawatha Munneswaram Temple, and Mannar Ketheeswaram Temple.
According to Sri Lanka's Ramayana story, this is a wonderful temple on a rock plateau built by Rishi Agasthi on the instructions of Lord Shiva who was impressed by the devotion of King Ravana. It is also mentioned in the epic Ramayana that Lord Rama performed the second linga here to get rid of the Brahmahasti dosha caused by the curse of killing Ravana, a Brahmin. It is also believed that Lord Rama offered his prayers here to get rid of this error.
Also, in connection with Sri Lankan Ramayana history, Koneswaram has many strong historical associations where the shrine is described in the Vayu Purana, Konesar Colvette, and the Thevaram Gee of Padal Petra Sthala by Sampanhar and Sundarar. Built here during the illustrious period of the Tamil Pallava Chola and Pandya emperors, this famous temple was destroyed by Portuguese Christians between 1622 and 1624. This temple is believed to have been developed since 205 BC. Its basic Dravidian temple plan, namely its thousand-pillared hall - the "Airam Karl Mandapam" - and the Jagati rendition by the Elara Manu Nidhi Chola king. This is considered the finest building of its era for its architecture, elaborate sculptural bas-relief ornamented black granite megaliths, and several gilded gopuram towers that were expanded during the medieval period.
3.Shri Badrakali Amman Hindu Temple.
At a distance of 2 km from Trincomalee Railway Station, Pathirakali Amman Temple is a Hindu temple situated at the center of Trincomalee town. It is one of the noted pilgrimage places in Trincomalee and among the must-visit places in Trincomalee while holidaying in Sri Lanka.
Pathirakali Amman Temple is dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali, the benevolent form of the goddess Kali Amman. Along with her, there are idols of Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The Pathirakali Amman Temple is a part of the temple complex of the ancient Trincomalee Koneswaram Temple compounds. The history of the temple dates back to the Chola kings from the 11th Century, and it has been attracting pilgrims ever since. King Rajendra Chola I expanded the shrine significantly during his reign, an inscription he left detailing this is displayed on the premises.
The temple is built in the classical Dravidian style of architecture which is similar to the temple styles found in South India. The spectacular gopuram of this Kali temple with its vibrant colors and myriad sculptures catches your eye from a distance, while the unique interiors will leave you spellbound. The temple walls are adorned with many beautiful sculptures that are nothing short of excellence. The temple is located just beyond the Konesar Road Esplanade before the entrance to Konamamalai (Swami Rock). Proximal to the ancient Koneswaram Temple, both ancient temples share functions during the Ther Thiruvillah Festival procession and the Back Bay Sea (Theertham Karatkarai).
The temple also holds an annual festival which is called the 'Mahotsavam' which lasts for about ten days and ends along with the Chariot festival of the Koneswaram temple. The feast of the Mahotsavam festival usually begins in the third week of March for 15 days when the devotees come and celebrate the feast. The Mahotsavam ends after ten days with the water-cutting ceremony will be held in the Back Bay Sea in the eastern port town.
